The nature of superstition

Ella Rhodes, journalist of the British Psychological Society’s monthly publication The Psychologist, stated as follows: ‘I would argue that one way to look at superstition is to think of it as an example of a cognitive illusion that makes us see causal relationships that aren’t real.’9

Illusion: a wrong or misinterpreted perception of a sensory experience. Causal: relating to or acting as a cause.10

US psychologist Stuart Vyse downplayed the significance of superstition. Said he,

Superstition is not a sign of madness or abnormality. It is not the manifestation of serious psychological problems. Indeed, luck-enhancing superstitions may have some positive effects. Although a person is more likely to engage in superstitious behavior while experiencing certain emotions, chiefly fear and anxiety, superstition is not usually the cause of emotional difficulties.11 The pervasive human desire for control is an important motivation for superstitious behavior. Superstitions provide a sense of control over the uncontrollable.12
